Phrasal Verbs – Get Part II

This entry is part 4 of 12 in the series Phrasal Verbs

(This is a series on Phrasal Verbs.  There are hundreds of phrasal verbs and many of them have no relation to the words that form them.  When you are learning a new phrasal verb, I recommend learning it as a completely new piece of vocabulary, instead of trying to make sense of the two pieces of the word.)

The word “get” combines with dozens (duzias) of words to create phrasal verbs, each with a different meaning. Because there are so many phrasal verbs with this term, I decided to extend the lesson into multiple parts. Remember, there is often no logic with phrasal verbs. Also, remember that phrasal verbs only conjugate the verb, not the preposition.

Get around (1) – dinfundir-se

The news about Patricia’s divorce got around very quickly.

Get around (2) – evitar algo desagradável

I thought I needed pick up my mother at the airport, but I got around it by calling a taxi.

Get out of – evitar uma responsibilidade

I got out of work by faking sickness.

Get down – abaixar

Physical: Get down! I have a gun!

Emotional: A full week without sun is starting to get me down.

Get Away – Escapar, fugir

I need to get away from the stress of Sao Paulo.
