Using “The” Correctly – Part I

The word “the” is a very small but very important word.

We use “the” in the following situations:

  • “The” always comes before a noun (the cat, the apple) or noun phrase ( the very interesting conversation)

  • “The” refers to one specific example of the object, and the specific example must be clear from the spoken or written context (I bought a book. The book that I bought is lost.)

  • “The” can be used with countable or uncountable nouns.

  • “The” is called a “definite article.” “A/an” are indefinite articles.
