(This is a series on Phrasal Verbs. There are hundreds of phrasal verbs and many of them have no relation to the words that form them. Give away is a phrasal verb that has a related noun – Giveaway. A giveaway is a contest with a free prize. Similarly, the verb form means to give something away for free.
Examples
- I need to give away my old clothes, because they do not fit me anymore.
- Sadly, we had to give our cat away. Our new apartment doesn’t accept animals.
