Phrasal Verbs – Give Away

This entry is part 11 of 12 in the series Phrasal Verbs

(This is a series on Phrasal Verbs.  There are hundreds of phrasal verbs and many of them have no relation to the words that form them.  When you are learning a new phrasal verb, I recommend learning it as a completely new piece of vocabulary, instead of trying to make sense of the two pieces of the word.)

Give away is a phrasal verb that has a related noun –  Giveaway. A giveaway is a contest with a free prize. Similarly, the verb form means to give something away for free.

Examples

  1. I need to give away my old clothes, because they do not fit me anymore.
  2. Sadly, we had to give our cat away. Our new apartment doesn’t accept animals.
